Oh, Well...

This probably should have been my post for yesterday's Insecure Writer's Support Group post. But as usual, I am a day late and more than a dollar short.

So I have been thinking these past few days... I want to know how people can crank out a series of books in such a short time? Is it just smoke and mirrors or does it just happen that fast?

I've had several book and story ideas floating around in my brain and I keep thinking, "Man, I need to get this stuff down on paper!" and I never do. I keep thinking this same thing, but then I find myself distracted by work, chores, finding a moment to relax and now I am trying to integrate exercise into my life and routine. I feel like there are times I just don't give writing my all and if I would... wow... the things I could produce!

So is it just me or do these books I see on the shelves seem to be appearing at an alarmingly fast rate? Do these authors not sleep? What keeps them motivated and on task? What drives them? Do they just write out complete and total rough drafts in an hour and spend the rest of the week hammering out the details?

I'm a pantser, I've admitted to that before. I write by the seat of my pants. Careful planning is not my style, but I am thinking perhaps it should be if I want to see more than one book come to fruition.

What's your take on this?

As someone who really doesn't sleep and has yet to publish her first book, I have the same thoughts every time I go into a book store.

If you're naturally driven and have ideas and energy out the wazoo, pantsing is definitely a viable option.

On the other hand, outlininh allows you to break the effort up into smaller blocks so you can keep pushing forward, like collecting pennies in a jar and then being amazed how much you've collected.

Of course the romantic view of writing is to just sit down and knock off a few thousand words before lunch, but sadly not the case in real life.

Some people are just born to be writers or have the energy and time to crank stuff out. I'm not one of those people. I do have some good ideas though. They just take time to sort through.

Are you kidding? I'm lucky to produce a book every 18-24 months. No idea how these people write so fast. Unless they have several done already.

I like the idea of collecting ideas to keep pushing forward and then see what I have after some time.
But since we are talking real life here, it takes me awhile to gather my wits about me. :D

I have tons of started ideas, anywhere from one sentence long to over 3000 words. No time get them all written out though.

And even when I have time, I'm usually asking myself where I was going with the interrupted thought.

I'm with you on often not making the time to write when I should. I don't understand how some authors crank out the books every year either! I remember reading that Enid Blyton wrote 800 books in 40 years. How did she DO IT??? One book definitely takes me longer than a year.
